[Important Note: This article is longer than usual one, so we suggest you to read it when you have some free time. At some point, you may feel that we hate Nokia Or HMD Global. We would like to clarify that there is no such issue. We still love Nokia & it will be always in our hearts.]
Did you know, why today’s announcement is really important for us?
Sadly, this is our last article on Nokiafanss.in & it took us several months to take such a painful decision. “When we’re no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves” this popular quote by Viktor Frankl is pretty much suitable to share today’s situation around the Nokia smartphones world.
We believe this is our responsibility to let you all know what went wrong which forced us to think about an alternative.
What was the purpose of Nokiafanss & For whom we started?
In 2018, we (Vikas Sirsat & Aniket Burande) started this website on August 15th which is an important date when all us in India celebrate the Independence Day. In the last 2 years & 4 months Nokiafanss.in reached to almost every Nokia fan around the world. Here’s a screenshot from Google Analytics which shows a traffic report for our website since the first day:
Over 82% Nokia fans who visited us till now belongs to our own nation, India. We’re thankful to everyone who visited us from all over the world but India was exactly where we wanted to reach. We wanted to share Nokia related news updates in a honest way with the thousands of fans across India.
What went wrong?
Since 2017, when Nokia phones made a comeback in the mobile industry, everything is very well in terms of feature phones but we can’t say the same for Nokia smartphones. Through this website & our social media pages, we tried our best to suggest HMD Global that the Indian smartphone market is very different from US or Europe.
Some of you may argue with us that you can’t expect Nokia smartphones to come at the cheapest prices. We also agree that we can’t compare Nokia smartphones with the devices from Chinese brands. But what we’re sharing todays is not a blame. There are some bitter facts you have to accept after 4 years of HMD Global. During this journey, here are 4 important things we felt very closely:
1) Continuous delay:
When other brands make global announcement of the smartphone, it hardly takes them few weeks to become available for customers. But what happens when HMD Global makes announcement of the new Nokia phones?
At first, there is a global announcement of products, then you have to wait for the next few months for local announcement, then there is a separate date for product availability & even after that when a customers visits local leading store they hardly find a stock of Nokia smartphones.
Considering a new company just entered in the mobile phone business this was acceptable in 2017. But when everyone is already criticizing your brand for using old chipsets + devices are being overpriced + customers have to wait for few months to become it available, no one would like to purchase them (except select Nokia fans).
We feel this could be the possible reason for why Nokia is still missing in the top 5 smartphone brands in India & also in top 10 brands globally.
2) Fans in India needs a dedicated series
India is a price sensitive market. This is the reason you see most of the smartphone brands within top 5 segment are Chinese companies because they are providing top features & specs at affordable prices but of course there is a compromise in terms of build quality.
Do you remember Nokia 5.1 Plus & Nokia 6.1 Plus? When HMD had launched these devices in India, they were one of the most popular phones in their segment because of their competitive price & powerful hardware.
We don’t have exact number of Nokia 5.1 Plus & Nokia 6.1 Plus sales but we can assure you that both of these devices in 2018 were one of the most most successful models for HMD. They should have continued such a good work with a India specific dedicated series.
Imagine if HMD had launched Nokia X71 like smartphone series (currently China & Taiwan exclusive product) in India, chances of its success were really high.
We generally never discuss about devices from competition but you can see how Samsung is also doing similar things with their Galaxy M series.
3) Lack of innovation:
Original Nokia phones were always known for their innovation. Except having great build quality, most of the time it looks like HMD Global is just a follower of industry trends & afraid of taking risks.
Let’s take an example of Nokia 9.3 PureView (aka Nokia 10 PureView) which is rumored to come with in-display front facing camera but as the technology is risky, HMD is waiting for competitors to launch them first & see reactions. This is just a single example.
The fact is industry leaders are known for taking risks & people always see their new inventions.
4) In India, after sales service needs improvements:
Just after few months of using Nokia 5.1 Plus, Nokia 6.1 Plus, Nokia 7.1, Nokia 7 Plus & Nokia 8.1 several users started reporting about faulty charging port issues & service centers were asking for Rs.1500 to Rs.4000 INR (depending on the model) to repair their device because physical damage isn’t covered in warranty.
Later in February 2020, HMD officially accepted this issue as a manufacturing defect (except for Nokia 7 Plus) & offered 6 months extended warranty with a one time charging port replacement for free of cost.
But it was too late to respond. Now, everyone who used these devices (including those who before called themselves a Nokia fan) had lost their trust on new Nokia phones.
Why we decided to look for an alternative?
As earlier we said, our purpose of this website & social media pages was to focus on news updates for Nokia fans across in India. But these days, things are not as same as they were used to be in 2017 Or 2018. During those days, it was very interesting to hear/write about new Nokia smartphones & fans across India were supporting the brand with a lot of love.
But now it hearts to say, Nokia smartphones are continuously failing in the Indian market. What hearts more is even after getting suggestions from thousands of Nokia fans & negative reviews from other customers it looks like brand is not ready to make necessary changes. We really don’t know exactly what they want to achieve with their current strategy.
In such a critical situation, after thinking for several past months we decided to come with a completely new website which will be once again focused on India.
It will be another great journey with all of you guys.
Introducing our new platform
This time our focus is not on the news updates but now your problems are more important for us.
With The Mobile Query (TMQ) we’ll raise most common issues related to your smartphone. In a simple words, if you are looking for a new smartphone which was launched in the recent months we’ll help you to find out what type of issues customers are facing in it.
In addition to this, we’ll try to find out really frustrated customers & will raise their issues. As we’re already working on this website from past few months, it’s now more easy to explain you how it works.
1) When Nokia 8.1 users were not getting October 2020 security patch update, The Mobile Query was one of the first website to report about it. Check out this article for more info.
2) A customer named Kshitij Pandey ordered a brand new POCO M2 Pro smartphone but Flipkart sent him a dummy smartphone instead.
We raised this issue & helped him to get a refund. You can find out more info about the same by visiting this article.
From January 1, 2021 you’ll see all of our social media accounts of “Nokiafanss” will be renamed as “The Mobile Query”. This includes our Facebook Page, Instagram account, Twitter account & YouTube channel. Unfortunately, our Telegram group will discontinue.
What will happen to Nokiafanss.in?
Our website will be still live for everyone, just you will not be getting latest news updates. This is our love towards Nokia which still doesn’t allow us to shut this site down.
Our best wishes are always with HMD Global & we hope that one day Nokia phones will be again leading the mobile industry.
Stay tuned for more updates 🙂
Looking forward to meet you on The_Mobile_Query !!
